In the Gopro stabilizer category, Zhiyun does not offer as much references than in the smartphone gimbals category. Yet, as you’ll see during this Zhiyun Evolution review, this product is really worthy of interest. By offering a very good stabilization and an insane battery life, this Gopro gimbal is bound to please you. Today, this Chinese manufacturer is really one of the main player on the stabilizers market and doesn’t have to prove its worth anymore as you’ll see during this Zhiyun Evolution review. Well, let’s start our Zhiyun Evolution review in which we’ll look into the essentiel 6 criteria to discover all its strengths and weaknesses.
Zhiyun Evolution review : the battery life is unbeatable
As always, let’s start this Zhiyun Evolution review with the same criterion which is the battery life of our 3-axis Gopro gimbal stabilizer. Thanks to its 2 Lipo 1S 3,7V 2000mAh batteries, the subject of our Zhiyun Evolution review will offer you an unbeatable battery life. During our test, we managed to run it for almost 7 hours while recharging our Gopro all time long. According to your use, if you don’t recharge your Gopro while you are using it, you’ll be able to reach up to 13 hours of battery life which is awesome. Our Zhiyun Evolution review is definitely very positive in this category. Indeed, no other competitor can boast such an insane battery life.
As we’ve just said in this Zhiyun Evolution review, you can recharge your Gopro while in use which is a real advantage according to us. Even though Zhiyun is not the only manufacturer who offers this possibility, it is still very pleasant to find it with our gimbal. In order to recharge your Gopro, there is nothing easier : you just have to use the little cable which is included in the pack and connect one of the motors to your Gopro. In the end, you’ll have an extended battery life for your Gopro and you will still have a very good battery life for your gimbal. The time when you had to care about battery life is a thing of the past with the Gopro stabilizer of our Zhiyun Evolution review.
As you’ll see later in this Zhiyun Evolution review, there are plenty of common points between this gimbal and one of its competitors : the EVO GP PRO, the American stabilizer for Gopro. When you have a look at them, you really feel like they are exactly the same. The feeling doesn’t go away when you look at them into details such as the different characteristics or functions. We will come back more precisely on these points later during our Zhiyun Evolution review. In the end, our grade is, without any doubt, 10/10 in this section of our Zhiyun Evolution review. The next section will be about the quality and reliability of this Chinese Gopro gimbal.
The quality and reliability
Our Zhiyun Evolution review continues with the quality and reliability of the gimbal. Each time we test a Chinese product, there is always a little “fear” as far as the quality and reliability are concerned, and this was the case at the beginning of this Zhiyun Evolution review. Yet, this Chinese manufacturer always ends up with very good results so there is really no reason to worry. The quality and the reliability do are here ! Like the EVO GP PRO for which we also did an in-depth review, the subject of our Zhiyun Evolution review answers really well in terms of quality.
During our test, we managed to notice the robustness of the grip and the very good quality of the motors which do very well. As always, do not switch the motors ON unless your Gopro is already fixed on your gimbal. Each time we do a Zhiyun Evolution review, this is the first thing we care about. In fact, even if you have the best quality motors, the fact of switching your motors ON without your Gopro will significantly deteriorate the quality of the latter, and, in the end, they may end up totally broken and impossible to use… This is the case with every gimbal, not only this one. The very good quality of the motors and of your gimbal can’t fight against an inappropriate use.
Further evidence of the quality and reliability of the subject of our Zhiyun Evolution review : it will work under temperatures between -4 and 113°F, which is really really impressive. During our Zhiyun Evolution review, we went to the mountain for a skiing day. It was approximately 23°F in average and everything was perfectly functioning. We don’t know how it would react under -4 or 113°F, but the performance was perfect at 23°F…
All in all, our grade for this section of our Zhiyun Evolution review is 8.3/10. Indeed, if we compare it with its clone, the EVO GP PRO, we do notice a little difference in terms of quality. Obviously, it’s not very visible, but we are forced to be very precise and accurate in our Zhiyun Evolution review in order for you to be able to compare the different gimbals we present to you in our Gopro gimbals comparison table. The third part of our Zhiyun Evolution review will be about the quality of the stabilization that we all really approved.
The stabilization is really convincing
Here we are at the third criterion of our Zhiyun Evolution review. Even though the stabilization is not as awesome as the EVO GP PRO’s one, this gimbal still does very well. In fact, during our Zhiyun Evolution review, we were very impressed by the quality of its stabilization. Thanks to its 6 core processor and 3 very good brushless motors, this Gopro stabilizer does a very good job at stabilizing your videos, be it very sportive ones or not. All big and small vibrations will be absorbed by your Gopro gimbal and you’ll get a perfectly smooth and stabilized video. Still, it will never be as good as the Removu S1 or Gopro Karma Grip gimbals which ended up with a 9.6 and 9.5/10 in our tests.
What we do enjoy too, and that mattered during our Zhiyun Evolution review is the reactivity of the motors. If you want to do slow or very fast moves, the motors will perfectly adapt themselves to the situation to produce very smooth and stabilized videos. During our Zhiyun Evolution review, we really tried to push it hard with very insane moves to see how the stabilization would work. Well…we’re not going to lie to you, when we did nonsense moves, the video was not very pleasant to watch. But, actually, this is the case with every gimbal and there is no reason you would do moves in every direction…unless you are trying to test the product as we were. When our moves were more natural, the outcome was definitely very good !
In the end, the subject of our Zhiyun Evolution review does its job pretty well when it comes to stabilizing your action camera. It is therefore a very good 8.8/10 that it gets on our Zhiyun Evolution review. Even though the stabilization is not perfect, it is not that far from it and the Chinese manufacturer really did a good job with this gimbal. In the next section, we’ll look into the different functions of this Gopro gimbal stabilizer.
Some classic functions
This fourth section of our Zhiyun Evolution review really does ring a bell with the EVO GP PRO. In fact, we would struggle to find any difference between this stabilizer and its American clone. There is therefore no real interest in writing again what we already wrote in our EVO GP PRO review. In fact, our Zhiyun Evolution review is exactly the same for this criterion. Be it for the modes, the compatible cameras or the use of the buttons and joysticks, everything is perfectly the same !
We therefore invite you to have a look at our in-depth EVO GP PRO review to know everything you should about the different functions. Logically, our grade in this section in the same than it’s competitor’s, that is to say 7/10. Indeed, like what the American gimbal offers, the Chinese low cost version really focuses on what is essential : the stabilization and the easy controlling. In the end, our Zhiyun Evolution review really reminded us the one of the EVO GP PRO. It is really surprising to see how similar these two gimbals are ! As you’ll see in the next section of our Zhiyun Evolution review, the same impression comes back for the taking in hand and controlling.
A very good taking in hand and controlling
One more time in this Zhiyun Evolution review, we feel like we are rewriting a test we already wrote. As we said just above, the external appearance of this Gopro gimbal stabilizer is perfectly the same than the EVO GP PRO. Consequently, we really do appreciate the grip of the gimbal ! We detailed this point in our EVO GP PRO test and this really pleased us. Only a few manufacturers produce long enough (according to us) grips. Here, the size is just perfect, not too long, not too short and you’ll really have a good hand grip on your gimbal.
As far as the controlling is concerned, our Zhiyun Evolution review is one more time a perfect copy of the EVO GP PRO. Therefore, we invite you again to read our EVO GP PRO review to have more information about all this. Be it for the stabilization of the camera or the different functions, you’ll really be able to apply everything we did on our EVO GP PRO test. Everything is identical !
The only thing we can talk about in this part of our Zhiyun Evolution review is the mobile application. In fact, the latter doesn’t exist with the EVO gimbal whereas there will be one with this stabilizer ! Yet, for now (may 2017), it doesn’t work very well. Some software updates could maybe correct it (we hope so) in order to be able to use the mobile application. This is really the only weakness on which this Chinese manufacturer has a lot of efforts to do. In the end, our grade for this section of our Zhiyun Evolution review is 9/10 which is really good. We now arrive at the conclusion of our Zhiyun Evolution review which will be about the price of the product.
Conclusion of our Zhiyun Evolution review : very competitive a price
Here’s maybe one of the most important point of our Zhiyun Evolution review. Indeed, up until now, we felt like we were just rewriting our EVO GP PRO review. Except for a few points (battery life, stabilization and reliability) everything is really identical between the two. Yet, the very big difference is the price ! Indeed, this Chinese Gopro gimbal will be less than 200$ whereas its American clone is about 349$.
This is really the very very big difference between the two. Note that you can use the Zhiyun Evolution with a Gopro Hero 5 Black but you’ll have to buy an adapter which costs approximately 20$. In the end, our grade for this criteria is 9.3/10. If you have a look at our Gopro gimbal comparison table, you’ll see that there are 3 gimbals with the same average grade of 8.8/10 and 2 have an average of 8.7/10. Yet, all are very different. This is why we always recommend you to read our in-depth reviews to know why they got these averages. There will always be one stabilizer which will suit your expectations best.
Just below, we’ve made you, as always, a very short summary of the Pros and Cons we’ve seen all along during this Zhiyun Evolution review.
- Pros : The battery life, the very good taking in hand, the easy controlling, the very good stabilization, its reliability and a very good price.
- Cons : The limited number of functions and the mobile application still pretty useless.
